The Greek Action of Volunteer Veterinarians (EDKE)
Voluntary Action of Veterinarians of Greece (EDKE) is an independent, non-profit association.
The establishment of this association is the fruit of a mature thought of a group of gifted Greek veterinarians who, being sensitized by the situation in Greece, are aiming to contribute directly to its normalization by providing unpopular veterinary assistance to stray or wild animals in need of care or / and are excluded from veterinary care.
In addition, the club also aims at enhancing the animal's sense of affection, hoping that stray animals will cease to be considered a "sore" and will gain the place they deserve in the heart of all Greeks.
• takes action in the form of organized group missions, its members do not act alone
• does not undertake cases of privately owned pets
• examines, cares and operates only on stray and wild animals
Organizing a mission
EDKE takes action after
• an invitation from animal welfare associations, local authorities or other groups that aim to help animals
• its own initiative in areas that need veterinary attention
EDKE does not take action in areas where there are already organized and functioning programs of the municipality for the protection of stray animals under the auspices of local veterinarians. Where there is lack of such programs, EDKE takes action only in agreement with local veterinarians.
Mission Expenses and Space
The expenses of each mission are covered by the inviting party (animal welfare association, local authorities etc) and/or the sponsors of the mission. The expenses include the consumables which will be used as well as the travel, catering and accommodation expenses of the volunteers.
A mission is not undertaken until arrangements have been made by the inviting party for
• the financial coverage of the mission and
• an appropriate space where veterinary services will be provided. The space should fulfill the prerequisites to be temporarily licensed by the local Veterinary Authorities or the Office of Rural Development of the Municipality, according to the Law 4-39/12 for the action of volunteer veterinarians.
Animals
A detailed record is kept for all animals treated by EDKE. The animals are recorded, photographed and kept under the responsibility of the contact person of the inviting party. The neutered animals are marked by an ear-cut.
